What is a hospice?
A hospice provides a range of services and facilities to those individuals living with a life-limiting illness.
Do you only treat people with cancer?
No, we treat people with a range of life-limiting illnesses, although predominately it is cancer.
What does palliative care mean?
This is all-round care for patients with a life-limiting illness that is incurable. In addition to specialist medical treatment for pain control and symptom management, palliative care also encompasses emotional, spiritual and social care. Its aim; to ensure the best possible quality of life is experienced.
How can I access the hospice services?
Referrals are taken from your GP, hospital or primary care specialist. Please click on this link for further information.
Does it matter where I live?
We take patients from across the Black Country, East Shropshire and South Staffordshire - check with your GP to see if you come into our catchment area.
How long is the average stay in Compton Hospice?
The hospice does not provide long-term care, however depending on your needs, your stay could be for a few days or a few weeks and you can be readmitted throughout the period of your illness.
Why are people admitted to a hospice?
Patients are admitted for a number of reasons, for example: supportive care following treatments such as chemotherapy, respite care to give family carers a rest, complex management of distressing symptoms or end-of-life care.
Is a hospice a place you come to die?
No, as over a third of patients admitted to Compton Hospice are discharged home or to another healthcare setting.
Do I have to pay for any of my care?
All our services are provided free-of-charge.
How much does it cost to run the hospice?
It costs over £5 million. We get a third of our costs from the Primary Care Trusts (NHS money) but have to fundraise for the additional £3 million plus each year, for which donations are always welcome.
