Light Up A Life 2009

“Today I lit a candle for you so that you might shine once more upon this world.”

Christmas is a very special and poignant time to remember loved ones we have lost.

Through our Light up a Life event, Compton Hospice offers a unique opportunity to honour those special to us, by dedicating a light on our celebratory Tree of Life.

Throughout the Christmas period, hundreds of lights shine out from our tree, each one a special gift for that someone special, a way of remembering them, as they were, a shining light in our lives.

Taking part

If you would like a light for your loved one this year, you can do so online by filling in the form here or call us on 0845 225 5497 and we will take your dedication over the telephone.

Light up a Life

For each donation we will

  • Dedicate a light on our tree
  • Record the name of your loved one in our Book of Dedication, along with your short message
  • Send you a memento to place on your own Christmas tree
  • Invite you to a candlelit service to witness the lighting of the Tree of Life
  • This year, for those making a donation of £25 or more for each individual dedication, we will also send you our Star Candle Holder complete with Battery Night Light for your home as a special "Thank You"

The Service

The service itself is very close to our hearts; what started out as a small event has grown to accommodate people attending in their hundreds, last year attracting around 500 guests.

Our chaplain, Barry Smart leads the service and along with a choir, the Salvation Army Band and guest speakers, helps every one of us to celebrate the lives of those special to us.

“Of all the duties I perform within the hospice, the Light up a Life service remains very special. It gives everyone the chance to celebrate the memory of their loved ones, whilst continuing to help the hospice support those who need the expert care from the dedicated staff at Compton.”

In 2008, we raised over £22,000 through our Light up a Life Appeal - enough to fund one of our community nurse specialists for 2/3 of a year.

Your message will be displayed in our on-line Book of Dedication and also handwritten into the actual Book of Dedication at the hospice.
