Dr Lee reaches the 'roof of Africa'
Towering almost 6,000 meters above sea level, Mt Kilimanjaro is both the highest point in Africa and also the world’s highest free standing mountain. It was the goal for one Wolverhampton GP this November.
Dr Eddie Lee, from Featherstone family health centre, chose to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, located on the northern border of Tanzania, to raise funds for Compton Hospice.
Ascending this mountain is a physically demanding challenge incorporating a high element of risk but reward with memorable experience. Dr Lee experienced a virtual climatic world tour from the tropics to the arctic. Even before he crossed the national park boundary at 2700m, the cultivated foot slopes gave way to lush forest inhabited by elephant, leopard and buffalo.
Above this was the moorland zone, until Dr Lee reached 4000m, then came the dessert which showed little life other than a few hardy mosses and lichen. Eventually the last vegetation gave way to a winter wonderland of ice and snow, laying the path to the magnificent beauty of the roof of the continent.
After conquering the high altitude, low oxygen environment and sub zero temperatures Dr Lee finally made it to the summit on the 9th November at 7.15am, raising over £1000 for the hospice.
Dr Lee said
“I wanted to complete this challenge to raise awareness of the admirably good work done by our local hospice. They have provide wonderful support for many years for my patients and their families during their very difficult and vulnerable time”
“It was tougher and colder than I expected, so I am very happy that I made it to the top”
“I have been touched by the support I have received from my patients, my surgery staff and my family, without their support, I would not have accomplished my mission.”
Compton Hospice would like to thank Dr Lee for taking part in this challenge for them and would also like to thank all of Dr Lee’s patients and everyone who sponsored him.
