Bikers traverse nine countries for Compton

Two epic adventurers have just traversed nine countries in eight days ‘Long Way Round’ style to raise money for local charity Compton Hospice.

Ralph Blore of Pendeford and Steve Hirons of Castlecroft set off on their 3,500 mile journey on 9th June, travelling by motorcycle across France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Italy and Switzerland.

The intrepid pair, both 53, joined forces with their local pub, The Westacres, to raise money for the hospice after Steve lost both his wife and mother to cancer within three years.

As his wife Sandra, 50, and mother Mary, 85, were supported by Compton Hospice, the friends wanted to recognise the charity’s vital work.

Ralph said: “Steve and I had always wanted to do a big trip on our bikes, before we got too old! When the Westacres focused their fundraising on Compton Hospice, we thought it would be the ideal time to fulfil our dream and, with their backing, incorporate it with fundraising for a cause close to our hearts.

“We covered nine countries in eight days with a minimum of 3500 miles, and whilst in Austria experienced some of the best roads in Europe including the Stelvio Pass.

“It really punished the bikes and for us ‘oldies’ it was tough, but once we set ourselves a target then stubbornness took over and it had to be accomplished.”

Steve and Ralph returned to Wolverhampton on Sunday 20th June, which co-incided with the hospice’s ‘Compton in the Park’ fun day at West Park.

The Father’s Day event launched a major fundraising drive for the charity, to complete a refurbishment project of the hospice’s in-patient unit in the next 12 months.
