- Jane Turner and Shivani Nana present the syringe driver
Compton Hospice has recently been presented with a bed and a syringe driver worth £3000 by the West Midlands Branch of the Motor Neurone Disease Association, in recognition of the services the hospice provides to MND patients.
Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that attacks the upper and lower motor neurons, leading to weakness and wasting of muscles, causing increasing loss of mobility in the limbs, and difficulties with speech, swallowing and breathing.
The effects of MND can vary enormously from person to person, from the presenting symptoms, the rate and pattern of the disease progression, to the length of survival time after diagnosis. Like Compton Hospice, The MND Association, whose aim is to provide physical, emotional and financial support to people affected by MND, receives little Government funding and relies heavily on money gained from fundraising events and public donations. The MND Association’s West Midlands Branch consists of just 20 volunteers and they recently decided to donate the money to purchase the equipment to aid Compton Hospice’s MND patients.
“We have long been aware that Compton Hospice serves MND and other non-cancer patients as several of our members have been supported by the hospice, it has also been host to several of our Open Meetings. We feel that it is appropriate to donate some items that would benefit both the hospice as well as people with MND,” commented Liz Hall, Treasurer for the West Midlands Branch.
The MND Association is a National Charity, No. 294354. Further information can be obtained by contacting the National Helpline Number 08457 626262, which is available 9am-5pm and 7pm-10.30pm Mondays to Fridays. Call charged at local rate.
