Compton Cyclists Get An Eiffel In Paris

North Downs, Undulations?
North Downs, Undulations?

Dr Mark Churn and Mrs Judy Cotton, between them raised over £3500 for Compton Hospice, when they joined a group of 100 cyclists who took part in the 2006 London to Paris Cycle Challenge. The event was held from 21st – 25th June, starting at Greenwich in London and finishing at the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Here is Mark’s story:

Mass stretching
Mass stretching

“Armed with a new bicycle, fitted with a saddle that had scored 10/10 for comfort in numerous magazines for cycle nerds, I headed off to Blackheath Common in London for the start of the challenge. On the morning of departure our leader stood on top of his white van doing his briefing and ensuring us that there were no hills in Kent just undulations. 95 miles of undulations later following the scenic route through the North Downs we arrived in Dover for the six o’clock ferry to Calais. Day two started with a mass stretching session on the hotel lawn before heading out into a force ten head-wind. Fortunately it only lasted 84 of the 85 miles of the cycle that day. It was surely the ‘Battle through the Somme,’ but finishing at a pleasant hotel on the harbour at Le Treport was a welcome relief. By day three we were wizened veterans of long distance cycling. The miles melted away and the weather was perfect for cycling as we headed inland for our stop at Beauvais, passing through some delightful picturesque villages on route. There was even time for some to stop for coffee. The final day was the run into Paris. One hundred or more cyclists riding past the Arc de Triomph, around the Place de la Concorde and along to finish under the Eiffel Tower was a sight to behold and enhanced the sense of achievement we all felt at completing the challenge.”
