Compton in the Park a huge success for hospice

A staggering 4,000 people turned out to our inaugural ‘Compton in the Park’ family fun day on June 20th at West Park, raising more than £20,000 for the hospice.

The sun shined on us all day, bringing the crowds to watch entertainment including an It’s A Knockout competition, dance troupes and live bands The Town, DC Fontana and Born Again Beatles.

Sponsorship for the It’s A Knockout teams combined with donations from stallholders, Harry Jones’ Funfair, and bucket collections made up the grand total.

The event was also sponsored by BBP Security Services & Training who provided personnel free of charge to help run the event effectively.

This was the first event of its scale put on by the hospice and was organised to kick-start our ‘Raise the Roof’ capital appeal, which aims to boost funds by £1million over 12 months for a major refurbishment project.

Head of fundraising, Sue Chance, said: “We were thrilled with the turnout to the event, and there was a fantastic atmosphere around the park as people enjoyed the entertainment.

“Everyone I spoke to had a wonderful time, whether they were taking part or attending as a visitor.

“We are enormously grateful to all those who offered their time to help make the day possible, including performers, comperes, BBP Security and hospice staff and volunteers.

“Because it has been such an amazing success, we are looking to stage something similar again next year – so watch this space!”

The “Raise the Roof” capital appeal will see the in-patient area of the hospice transformed, providing single en-suite rooms for patients in place of current four-bed wards. It will also provide better out-patient and therapy facilities,                                                                improve access and shorten waiting times.
