Jacob Scrambles Sponsorship
Usually, the windswept sands of Weston-Super-Mare are home to the historic symbols of the British seaside. But for one weekend a year sticks of rock and donkey rides are replaced with over a thousand motor enthusiasts, and the crowd they draw almost doubles the population of the coastal town.
The Weston Beach Race, this year in its 26th year, attracts all manner of competitive off-road vehicles including quads, sidecars, and over 800 dirt bikes compete several endurance races over a rugged course where sand embankments and jumps are laid out every few hundred yards throughout the three-mile lap.
One of the main elements of the beach race has always been the number of competitors riding to raise money for charity and this year was no different.
One such rider was Jacob Lowe, from Albrighton, who opted to take part in the Youth’s 85cc Race in aid of Compton Hospice. The 13 year old, who attends Wolgarston High School, chose to raise funds for the charity when a close family friend came to the hospice for support, before sadly passing away.
Jacob, who has been riding since he was six, jumped aboard his Edmonson KTM and with the 150 other riders started the hour long ride, aiming to see how many laps he could complete. Unfortunately as Jacob approached one of the jumps his front tyre hit the dune awkwardly, lifting his back wheel and throwing him clean over the handle bars, the impact causing Jacob to break his collar bone.
Jacob, whose injury has now fully healed, and is back on his bike competing in similar events, came to the hospice at the beginning of February to present a cheque for a massive £1900.
