Memory Walk a starting success

The Annual 5 Mile Memory Walk and Fun Run took on further changes this year.

The event, that took place on Sunday 20th June at west Park, Wolverhampton, was one of the main attractions of our capital appeal fun day and brought in over 350 registrations.

For the first time ever we assembled all of the participants together so we could send them off at the same time and kick start the fun day.

The anxious runners, joggers and walkers gathered in the main arena at 9 am to be greeted by 107.7 the Wolf’s very own Dicky Dodd, who warmed and jeered the crowd up.

At 9.30 our very own Sammy Sunflower led the eager participants to the starting post for the 10 second countdown. Then a sea of yellow balloons, t-shirts and sunflower hats were set off to do the 5 mile course.

Diane Gatenby, fundraising co-ordinator for the hospice said

“On previous occasions we have had an open registration time for our walk which enabled people to turn up and complete the route at their leisure, so we were very unsure about having a single start time this year.”

“However, people seem to have enjoyed the company and support they have received from complete strangers at this, what is a very emotional event.”

“It is very hard to gauge what a group of 300-400 people looks like until you have them there all together and I must admit it looked very impressive, with the mass of yellow walking around the park

Compton Hospice would like to thank everybody who took part in this year’s event, which is expected to raise more than £20,000 for the hospice.
