Penkridge Cyclists hit Blackpool

On 31st July to 2nd August 2009, members and friends of Penkridge Round Table completed their Annual bike ride event, in aid of Compton Hospice.

Christopher George and Elliot Goodbody instigated most of the fundraising for years challenge that comprised of a grueling 166 mile route from Blackpool to Penkridge over three days.

The first day covered 82 miles from Blackpool to Hayfield culminating in experiencing some significant climbing as they hit the Peak District. Then the heavens opened on day two, which made the 42 mile route to Ashbourne, often on disused railway lines, quite tricky. On day three they started with the hills again warming them up nicely for the rest of the 43 mile cycle back to Penkridge.

Gordon Shearer, bike ride spokesperson for Penkridge & District Roundtable said

“Each year we try to follow the National Cycling Network routes but this year many of them were still in proposed status, making the navigation challenging at times.

The guys have been preparing for months with some making serious sacrifices by spending less time in the pub, all in the name of raising money for this excellent charity.”
