Proud Wolverhampton fights back as gift shop and charity join forces

A well-known Wolverhampton gift shop and one of the citys best loved charities have joined forces to show the strength of pride in the city with a special bag.

Fothers gift shop, in the Wulfrun centre, has teamed up with Compton Hospice to sell I love Wolverhampton shopping bags, with £1 from each sale going to the city’s hospice.

The pride in Wolves bag comes after the Lonely Planet travel bible listed the city as the fifth worst in the world in an online survey last month, with one reviewer likening the city centre to Ground Zero in New York.

Despite the negative review the I Love Wolverhampton hamper has become Fothers’ best selling bag.

The gift shop along with the charity decided to join together to fight back against the negative comments and show their support for city.

“This survey is ridiculous, it’s easy to be negative but there are a lot of people who think positively about our city,” said Brian Fothergill who has run Fothers gift shop with his wife Margaret for the last six years.

“We’ve had people from outside the city buying the bags because they say they love Wolverhampton as a shopping centre.

“People from here buy the bags as well which just shows the sense of pride people from Wolverhampton have in their own town,” he said.

“It’s now our best selling bag and we’ve sold more than 100 of them since the summer and we’ve had to order more. Now we’ve teamed up with Compton Hospice because it’s such a great local charity to support.”

Sue Chance, head of fundraising at Compton Hospice, said: “The description of Wolverhampton in the guide is not one we recognise.

“With our work at Compton Hospice we see the very best side of people from Wolverhampton and the region, who show their compassion and their generosity in supporting their local charity, which often involves really putting themselves out doing some fantastic fundraising.

“We’re very happy to join up with Fothers and in just a small way show our pride in the spirit that people from Wolverhampton show to us every day.”
