Pub regulars raise £1,000 in thanks for grandmother's hospice care

Regulars at a Telford pub have raised more than £1,000 for Compton Hospice to say thanks to the care given to grandmother Josie Powney who died last year.

The landlord of the Britannia Inn in Aqueduct Road, Josie Powney’s son Andy Powney, along with family members, organised a range of events at the pub which raised £1050 in just a week.

The fundraising included a quiz night, darts, race night, dominoes competition and a charity raffle of 27 items donated by customers and local businesses.

Josie had been treated twice at Compton Hospice before her death from cancer in November 2009.

“We just wanted to say thanks for the fantastic job Compton Hospice did, they were amazing, we couldn’t have wished for anything more,” said Josie’s grand-daughter Kerry-Anne Powney.

“Everybody helped in the fundraising, they really rallied round and did absolutely brilliantly,” she said.

Compton Hospice community fundraiser Sally Woods said: “It’s a fantastic effort by everybody at the Britannia Inn that they’ve been able to raise this amount of money and in such a short time, a really big thank you to everyone.”
