The Train Challenge Trio!

Three train enthusiasts from Lichfield raised over £800 for Compton Hospice when they took part in The London Tube Challenge.

The Tube Challenge is the accepted name for the Guinness World Record for visiting all London Underground stations in the shortest time possible. The record for visiting all 274 stations is held by Geoff Marshall and Neil Blake with a time of 18 hours, 35 minutes and 43 seconds.

Ian, Simon and Julian Starting Their Tube Challenge

On 22nd May, Ian Wootton, Simon Ward and Julian Holt, all friends from their school days, left their bed and breakfast in Amersham to catch the first train out at 0528hrs. By 1930hrs they had been traveling the London Tubes for 14 hours and were only 30 minutes behind schedule, making it still possible to visit every station and still make the last train to Upminster, their finish point.

Unfortunately the trio hit signaling problems on the Piccadilly Line which delayed them to the degree that they had to look at missing out some stations to ensure they made the Upminster train. Eventually Ian, Simon and Julian rolled into Upminster at 0040 hrs having visited 267 of the 274 stations, their total tube traveling time was 19hrs and 12 minutes.

“The record is still out there and we want it. We will try again next year but will be wiser and learn from the mistakes we made this year” commented Ian, he added “Of course the main purpose was to raise money for Compton Hospice, and we are very please by the support we have had in raising this money, thank you to all who have sponsored us.”
