On 28th June 2008, local lady Doris Griffiths and 15 of her friends from the walking for health in Wolverhampton scheme, donned their walking boots and set off on their mission to climb the highest mountain in England and Wales, Mt Snowdon.

Battling through the wind and rain, the group took approximately 4 hours to reach the 1085m summit, ascending via the Pyg Track and a further 4 hours to make the Llamberis Path descent.

At the age of 71, Doris, from Goldthorn Park, Wolverhampton, was the oldest member of the group and chose to complete the climb in aid of Compton Hospice, collecting over £250 in sponsorship from family and friends. Community fundraiser, Michelle Price, said: “We are extremely grateful for the support we receive from people like Doris, who give up so much of their time to raise funds for us.”

She added,

“I have climbed Snowdon several times myself and the Pyg Track certainly isn’t a walk in the park, Doris should be very proud of her accomplishment and I hope I am still able to achieve what she has when I am in my seventies”.

Walking for health in Wolverhampton is part of Wolverhampton PCT. Their aim is to increase the number of people taking up walking as a free form of exercise, thereby increasing the levels of physical activity and social inclusion in the local community.
