Walking the Wall for Compton

From 15th to 25th October 2009 Annette Fitzpatrick from Perton and Karen Lyon from Penkridge decided to challenge them themselves in a way they had never been challenged before. Here is Karen's story:

I first registered for a Mount Etna Challenge which I had seen advertised whilst I was at Compton Hospice Wolverhampton with my husband. My challenge was that I needed to raise some money for the hospice due to all the care and support they gave to Tim and myself 2008/2009.

Unfortunately this trip was later cancelled due to low numbers, so I decided to take part in a trek on the Great Wall of China, still to raise money for the same charity “Compton”.

There were 35 of us from all over the country aged between 18 – 59 on the trek all raising money for their own charities.

We walked around 80 miles on the wall over 7 days with many steep sections and lots of steps with limited amenities if you know what I mean!  Some areas we walked over were restored sections of the wall where many tourists visit each year, but there were also many unrestored sections which were more challenging to us and with no tourists to be seen.

All 35 of us completed the challenge successfully.

The experience of the walk has been amazing with fantastic scenery, such a memorable experience to be part of, words cannot explain how I now feel but I can say that it has helped me to move forward and be more positive.

It has all been so worthwhile as I have raised over £5,000 for the hospice with the help and support from family, friends and work colleagues. I could not have done this without all of their support. I have met some really special people from the walk who are now good friends as well.

China is an amazing country and I feel that I have been privileged to take part in a once in a lifetime experience with a personal challenge completed.
