Workers complete leap of faith for Compton challenge

More than 40 workers swapped the office for a gruelling assault course to help raise nearly £7,000 for Compton Hospice.

The third Wolverhampton Business Challenge, organised by Wolverhampton letting agents, Lawsons and Compton Hospice, involved a total of ten teams taking on the testing course at Baggeridge Country Park near Dudley.

The teams took on daring challenges including the leap of faith, jumping from a 40ft high platform to grasp a swing suspended nearly 10 feet away, a parachute jump from a ledge, crossing a high rope course 40ft in the air and climbing totem poles. There were also team building and intelligence tests throughout the day.

A team from Beacon BNI came top of the tree to take the trophy with Wulfrun BNI second and BNI Villers third. There were also teams from Lawsons, Compton Hospice, People Plus Recruitment, two teams from Birmingham Midshires and a team from Natwest.

Managing director of Lawson’s Sally Lawson said the challenge has got tougher each year, and the rewards even higher.

“Everyone was caked in mud on the day but it was all for a very good cause. We raised £1,000 more for Compton Hospice than we did in last year’s challenge which is a fantastic effort.

“Business people had the chance to make new contacts in more unusual circumstances but hopefully those introductions will be stronger as a result.”

The event is facilitated each year by local events management company Closer to the Edge, who organise the teams throughout the day and do a fantastic job of motivating the participants into pushing past their fears and reservations.

Karen Phillips, corporate fundraiser at Compton Hospice has worked alongside Lawsons for the past two challenges, helping to market the event, and is hugely grateful for the commitment of both Lawsons and Closer to the Edge for making the event such a success.

She said: “Each year’s challenge has been great, with energetic and demanding tasks - I know the teams who take part tell us they wouldn’t miss it for the world. All the teams are winners!

“But the best element for us is that the money raised goes straight to patient care at Compton Hospice. We rely on the goodwill of the public and local businesses to help us continue to look after people with life-threatening illnesses and Lawson’s fantastic efforts are really appreciated.”
