Create a card for Compton

A local craft company has turned a simple idea into an exciting fundraising venture which has raised over £2,000 for Compton Hospice.

Mountain Ash Craft, the on-site craft shop at Halfpenny Green Vineyard, started the initiative last year with a target of collecting 2,000 donated hand-made cards to boost the charity’s coffers.

They’ve been astounded at the response, with 3,000 unique cards received to date, and made the most of the giving season by inviting locals to make a bumper batch of Christmas cards.

Mathew Hill, owner of the Mountain Ash craft shop, said: “Making cards at home has become a very popular hobby and there is obviously a demand for them - as some of my customers have set up lucrative businesses from it.

“I’ve been overwhelmed by the generosity of our customers who are obviously spurred on by such a good cause, and thought it might interest other crafty people in the region.

“We’ll be supplying all the materials and there will be professionals on hand to help out, so anyone who wants to have a go is welcome regardless of age, experience or ability.”

Local businesses including Council have been selling the cards for £1 each, with all monies going straight to patient care at the hospice.

Corporate fundraiser for the hospice and co-ordinator of the campaign said: “This is such a simple idea and yet it is raising massive funds.

“We’re always looking for new ways of raising the £5.2million needed annually to maintain the hospice’s services, and we’re very grateful to Mathew for his help in making this such a successful venture.”

The card-making events were held in November where members of the public were invited to make the cards at the companies custom built craft shop.
