Going the extra mile for hospices

Staff and customers of Midcounties Co-operative went the extra mile to raise £25,000 in a charity walk for Help the Hospices.

Participants of all ages stepped out on the ‘Walk the Walk’ event from Kemp Hospice in Kidderminster to Compton Hospice in Wolverhampton to exceed last year’s £17,000 total from a similar fund-raiser.

All 240 people who completed either the 20-mile route or a shorter distance of about eight miles from Wombourne were presented with a medal by Midcounties chief executive, Ben Reid.

The oldest walker to finish the 20-mile route was Gordon Maycroft, 81, of Stourport.

Mr Reid said: “I am very proud of everyone who took part and raised so much sponsorship for our charity partner.”

The walk culminated in a barbeque and music roadshow by Dicky Dodd of 107.7 The Wolf Radio in the grounds of Compton Hospice.

The sponsored walkers represented Midcounties trading groups in food retail, post offices, funeral, travel, pharmacy, childcare and support offices in the Midlands and Oxfordshire.

The society’s businesses are raising money for Help the Hospices and the 11 hospices in its trading area for the second successive year.

Simon Cater, corporate fundraiser at Compton Hospice, said: “We’ve been amazed at the support offered from staff members, friends and family at the Midcounties Co-operative.

“They have raised a staggering amount of money, but it’s great to see that they’ve all had fun doing it!”
