Pay packets pounds for the hospice

Compton Hospice has enlisted a dynamic new fundraiser to revitalise its 'Give as You Earn' scheme.

Simon Cater, former activities co-ordinator in the hospice’s day care unit, took up the challenge in April and a rise in the fundraising figures shows his work is already paying dividends for the charity.

Donations through regular payroll giving had suffered with the degeneration of the manufacturing industry.

Now Simon is set to turn their fortunes around, taking the hospice’s message to the thriving commercial market in and around Wolverhampton.

Supporters of the scheme now include local businesses such as N&W Global Vending, Sigmacast in Bilston and Ductile Cold Mill, Willenhall.

“Setting up a payroll giving scheme at work is so easy and doesn’t cost anything for employers to do,” said Simon.

“It is extremely beneficial for us to have these s, in place because they provide a stable and regular income that allows us to plan for our future.

“It takes £5.4 million each year just to maintain the current services at Compton Hospice and we want to be able to expand and improve s those services for the benefit of the communities we serve.

“We rely heavily on support from individuals and companies to make this happen and I can’t stress enough how even £1 per week from employees adds up over the years to provide a vital contribution to that target.

“Employee schemes take donations from wages before tax, making the total value to the hospice 28% greater than the actual cost to the employee.”

Ray Cox, Financial Controller at N&W Global Vending and a current supporter of the ‘Give as You Earn’ scheme at Compton Hospice, said: “Everyone at N&W considers Compton Hospice a very worthy local charity and the Give as You Earn scheme offers us the ideal way to provide ongoing support.

“Our employees have been donating under the scheme for several years now and don’t miss the couple of pounds each month coming out of their wage packet.

“It’s good to know that the money we send, with the bonus of the tax benefits adding to our contributions, gives the hospice more financial security.”

Simon added: “Our ‘Give as You Earn’ scheme is currently being supported by about 100 companies across the region and brought us £75,000 last year, but there is the potential to raise a lot more with the help of local employers.

“It’s a great way of partnering a local charity, even if you haven’t got time to organise fundraising activities, and goes a long way to fulfilling your corporate social responsibility for little outlay of time or money.”
