Compton Hospice aims to raise the roof with £1 million appeal
A £1 million appeal has been launched by Wolverhampton's Compton Hospice to fund improved patient care.
Supporters can sponsor a tile on a new energy efficient roof as part of the plans to bring hospice care into a new era. And companies and organisations who can afford more significant backing are also being sought.
A host of fundraising activities is under way to swell the coffers of the appeal which will go towards a £3.5 million cost of renovation work at the hospice in Compton Road West.
Work on the improvements is set to start in June. The government has pledged £496,000 and the rest of the funds have been allocated from hospice reserves.
Head of PR and fundraising Sue Chance said: “For nearly three decades, Compton Hospice has been praised for the excellent standard of care given to desperately ill local men and women – and their families – at the most difficult time they will face. All of this care is provided absolutely free of charge.
“Now the hospice is in urgent need of an upgrade. Our in-patient and day care facilities are more than 28 years old, and wear and tear have taken their toll.
“Our dedicated nursing team do a fantastic job, but now the building is stopping them from providing the care they want to offer.
“The hospice needs to improve the environment for patients and their carers - providing easier access, reducing waiting times, and enabling more patients to be treated. Improvements are also needed for our day care facilities, outpatient and therapy services.
“We will be creating single en-suite rooms to provide greater privacy for patients, new communal areas, consulting rooms and day care facilities and much more - including a new energy efficient roof.”
Compton Hospice provides palliative care for around 1,500 people with cancer and
other life-limiting illnesses. Patients come from Wolverhampton, Dudley, Walsall, South Staffordshire, East Shropshire and Sandwell. At any one point in time, the hospice is typically caring for more than 625 local people through an in-patient unit, day care facilities, community nurse specialist teams and other services.
Sue added: “We’re appealing for as many people as possible to take part, by sponsoring a brick – not just local Black Country folk, but everyone they know, there’s a range of options available – from £50 to £5,000. So as well as doing their bit, we’d like supporters to ask their friends, family and colleagues to join in and sponsor a brick or stone and see how high they can go!”
Six ways you can help Compton Hospice raise the roof:
1. Make a general donation to the “Raising the Roof” campaign and help to put tiles on the roof of the refurbished building.
2. Buy an engraved brick for just £50 or £100, or an engraved granite stone from £500 to £5,000 to create a lasting message along the “Walkway of Memories”.
3. Sponsor a suite. A single en-suite in-patient room will cost £60,000 to create. Compton fundraisers hope trusts, companies and individuals will contribute towards this - with the sponsor’s name permanently commemorated on a plaque in the suite.
4. Take part in our Fun Day at West Park on Sunday, June 20. Come along on the day, run a stall, enter a team in “It’s A Knockout”, or do your own fundraising and present
a cheque on the day - live on Radio Wolf.
5. Ladies can join a “Trick or Treat” sponsored midnight walk for Halloween on Saturday, 30 October.
6. Support the many events arranged by Beacon Radio 97.2 FM in support of the appeal - including “Walk the Black Country” from Monday 7 – Friday 11 June.
