Compton Hospice reception gets new look with £48,000 facelift
Wolverhamptons Compton Hospice is set to show a new face to visitors with a complete refurbishment of the main reception area.
The £48,000 facelift at the Compton Road West unit is set the make the area more welcoming for visitors and relatives, providing a more spacious and comfortable area.
The walls of the new welcome suite will feature glasswork from city interior designer and glass artist Sue Hope, which will incorporate individual glass elements created by patients and staff.
The redesigned suite will include a new reception desk, providing better access for wheelchair users, and a new quiet area which can be used by relatives to talk to staff or discuss donations in private.
Work on the refurbishment will result in the closure of the reception area for two weeks from Monday 15 February to Monday 1 March. All of the reception facilities and staff will be temporarily housed in other rooms at the main hospice site with appropriate signage provided for visitors.
Most of the cost of the building work is being met by two grants totalling £30,000 with the addition funding from gift aid, claimed from a large donation, along with a small donation by one of the reception staff volunteers.
“The redesign will completely transform this key area of Compton Hospice making it brighter, more modern, providing a friendlier and more comfortable environment for visitors,” said Ron Middleton, Compton Hospice chief executive.
“The glasswork by Sue Purser Hope, which will incorporate work by staff and patients, will add a touch of magic and distinction to the room.”
Susan Purser Hope, who has designed the refit, has previously done work for the hospice, redeveloping the Wulfruna Suite, incorporating the memory glass blanket and living glass screen, and in the garden refurbishment.
When completed the design will enable the room temperature to be more easily controlled, making the suite more comfortable, and wheel chair users will be able to get right up to the main desk and speak face-to-face with staff, said Mr Middleton.
“The quiet room will be of great new benefit, providing a private area for relatives who may have lost a loved one away from the bustle of the area,” he added.
The glasswork on the suite walls will feature individual work completed by hospice patients and staff following a series of workshops with Susan Purser Hope.
She said: “The design of the welcome suite tries to open up the area and take away barriers for visitors.
“People coming to a hospice for the first time may be nervous and apprehensive but Compton Hospice is a very happy and vibrant place. The design tries to make that warmth envelope people as the come in and make them more relaxed.
“The redesign will also create a more efficient and organised working area for the reception staff and so provide a better service for everyone visiting the hospice,” she said.
