Hospice reaps rewards of fundraising drive

A year's worth of fundraising paid off for Compton Hospice as it took delivery of a brand new ambulance in May 2007.

The £37,000 state-of-the-art vehicle was put to use straight away transporting patients to and from the hospice’s day unit, a facility offering practical, therepeutic and social activities for patients coping with a terminal illness.

Day unit patients, staff and volunteers kicked off the fundraising drive last April and raised £7,000 through the sale of patients’ crafts, a Christmas fayre, coffee morning and general donations.

A windfall donation of £30,000, from the settlement of a legacy of a long-term hospice supporter, then made the purchase a possibility much sooner than expected.

Day unit co-ordinator, Linda Reade , said: “Many of our patients travel into the day unit in the ambulance and they were very aware our old ambulance was slowly disintegrating on us.

“They wanted to help raise funds to replace it and it’s great to see their hard work and enthusiasm paying off.

“We were expecting to be fundraising for a few years, so the legacy was very welcome to make it a reality so soon.”

Head of fundraising and communications, Tracy Marsh , said: “With more than £5 million needed each year just to maintain the current services, finding extra for expensive equipment can be extremely difficult.

“We’re really grateful to everyone who’s helped in making this happen.”
