New home for hospice bereavement service
Bereavement counsellors at Compton Hospice hope to help more families after opening the door to a new therapy suite this week.
As part of a £3.5million refurbishment project currently in progress, the charity’s bereavement service has moved away from the main hospice site to their Cedars premises on Compton Road West.
A former three-bedroom flat, located above the lymphoedema out-patient clinic, has been re-designed to accommodate the specialist service which includes support for children and adults on an individual or group basis.
Hospice staff believe the move will encourage more families to access the help on offer.
Bereavement services co-ordinator, Dodie Graves, said: “Family members sometimes find it difficult to return to the hospice immediately after losing a loved one.
“Although the hospice is a place of comfort for them while caring for a loved one, it holds a lot of memories that they may not want to confront straight away.
“By moving to a different site, we want to provide a haven for them where they can feel at ease and talk or just take time out.”
The new facilities include a children’s room, where a family support worker can help youngsters prepare for and come to terms with losing someone close, and an adult counselling suite.
A complementary therapy room has also been added to offer free treatments including aromatherapy and reiki to family members.
