Open day set to continue hospice Raise the Roof appeal's great start

In-depth details of Compton Hospice's £3.5m redevelopment are set to be unveiled at an open day at Wolverhampton Racecourse on Monday, July 12.

Organisers hope the open day, from 10-4pm, will give people a better understanding of the work of the hospice along with the redevelopment and boost the project’s Raise the Roof appeal, which has raised more than £50,000 in just over two months.

Open day visitors will get the first chance to see a new DVD about the hospice’s work and the appeal, which is set to be shown on the large public screens in Wolverhampton’s Mander Centre and Merry Hill shopping centre later in the year.

They can also talk directly to staff about all aspects of the hospice’s work and hear directly from nurses about how the improved facilities will create a more homely environment for patients and their families.

The charity launched the Raise the Roof appeal in April to raise £1m from supporters as part of a £3.5m programme to completely redevelop the entire interior of the ward and therapy areas of the hospice building on Compton Road West.

Hospice chiefs say the programme will dramatically enhance the standard of care by reducing waiting times, increasing the number of patients treated and improve privacy with single, en suite rooms for every patient.

The appeal has raised just over £51,000 in its first 10 weeks, with most of the support coming from public giving. About £20,000 was raised from the Compton in the Park family fun day in June with another £20,000 from general donations to the Raise the Roof appeal.

Beacon radio presenters Fresh and Jo raised just over £4,000 with a week-long, 55-mile walk across the Black Country, hosting their breakfast programme from different locations each morning.

More than £2,000 has already been pledged in the buy a brick campaign where supporters can put their own inscription into a Walkway of Memories in the hospice grounds, with another £5,000 being pledged through trusts.

Sue Chance, head of fundraising at Compton Hospice, said: “Raising over £50,000 in a little over two months is a fantastic start to our Raise the Roof appeal, it has set a fabulous foundation for the rest of the appeal.

“At the open day we want to tell more people about the wide variety of great work carried out both at the hospice and by our staff in the community.

“People can hear first hand from our staff about the work they do and just how the redevelopment programme will transform the care we provide, not only for our patients but for their carers and families.

“We hope a more in-depth understanding will encourage more people to get involved in the fundraising for the redevelopment, there couldn’t be a more local or more worthy cause,” she said.

Visitors are welcome to come along to the open day at the Hospitality Suite at Wolverhampton Racecourse anytime from 10-4pm, admission is free.
