Party proves perfect tonic for Compton children
Youngsters who have been through the pain of losing a loved one were treated to a special party thanks to the generosity of a bereaved family.
Staff from Compton Hospice accompanied the 17 children to the NIA in for a day of fun and games, donated by a kind family who had suffered a loss themselves, and were keen to see the young people have some fun.
The hospice runs a bereavement service to help anyone who has been connected with a patient to cope with their loss, and has qualified counselors plus a team of specially-trained visitors to help people deal with their grief.
The special event included team games, tag rugby, bouncy castles and burgers, and was a great way of giving the children some relief from their problems. Ann Doherty, family bereavement support worker at, said the event gave the youngsters a chance to meet others with similar experiences, and to realise that they are still allowed to enjoy themselves.
“We asked the group what had been important about the day, and they told us how nice it was to be with people who know how you feel, and to not have to explain yourself, and simply, how great it was to just have fun,” she said.
“Even the staff at the NIA commented on how well the children got on together. None of them knew each other, but the experiences they had in common helped them to bond, and they all got on really well.
“By the end of the day, they were all asking when the next event was going to be, so we are delighted it proved such a success.
“On behalf of the hospice and all those involved with the bereavement service, we would like to pass on our thanks to the family who so kindly donated this event.”
