Patient transfer heralds start of redevelopment at Compton Hospice

Patients are set to be transferred from Compton Hospice to the nearby Nuffield Hospital on Thursday July 1 to allow work on a £3.5m redevelopment of the hospice to start.

It is expected that patients will be transferred by ambulance during the day allowing the hospice to operate as normal from the 14 single-bedded ward at the Nuffield site for the duration of the rebuilding work, which is expected to take around 10 months. The admission of new patients will continue as normal to the Nuffield hospital.

All other patient services provided at the main hospice building will also be relocated in the days following the transfer of patients. The day unit will move to the Stephen Morton room and dining room on the main hospice site with bereavement and certain therapy services moving to the Cedars building.

The programme of work to completely redevelop the interior of the main patient unit is due to start by the end of July.

Hospice chiefs say the redevelopment will improve facilities at the unit allowing more patients to be treated, cutting waiting times, improving privacy with single, en suite rooms as well as providing improvements in day care, outpatient and therapy service accommodation.

A range of hospice staff will be explaining how the redevelopment will improve the patient experience, as well as the wide variety of work carried out at Compton Hospice, during an open day at Wolverhampton Racecourse on Monday July 12, from 10am to 4pm. The event will also promote the Hospice’s Raise the Roof appeal, to collect £1m through public donations towards the cost of the building work, which has already raised more than £50,000.

“The Nuffield Hospital provides the ideal location to ensure the transfer of patients goes smoothly and that the work of Compton Hospice can continue with minimal disruption whilst the building work takes place over the 10 months,” said Compton Hospice chief executive Ron Middleton.

“A great deal of planning and preparation has taken place to ensure the transfer of patients goes ahead without a hitch, with the safety and comfort of our patients being paramount at all times. Patients and their relatives have been kept closely informed about all the arrangements.

“The Nuffield Hospital offers first class accommodation and we’re delighted to be able to offer Compton Hospice patients such a great environment for their care whilst this essential redevelopment to modernise our facilities takes place.

“We have worked closely with management at the Nuffield to ensure care will continue as normal and since we have used their facilities before, our staff are familiar with the environment and in the process of transferring patients.

“Patients will be treated in single rooms at the Nuffield which is exactly what will eventually be created in our redeveloped unit, so this period at the Nuffield will be good experience for our staff at working in such a different environment,” he said.
