Patients capture memories in glass
A glass screen of patients' special memories has been installed at Wolverhampton 's Compton Hospice to mark the completion of the first phase of its £¼ million refurbishment programme.
Brainchild of local interior design firm, Hope Studios , the screen includes more than 30 individual, inch-square glass tiles, hand painted by patients, staff and volunteers at Compton Hospice to capture treasured memories.
Those participating in the project attended glass design workshops led by Hope Studios ’ interior design director, Sue Hope, and local artist, Rebecca Cresswell , who has also been involved in the revamp.
“We were really keen to actively involve patients, staff and volunteers in some way with the design work, and thought the glass screen would be a great way of achieving that,” Sue Hope explained.
“Further workshops will be held in the future and we will continue to add tiles to the screen, so it will become a ‘living’ piece of art that everyone who uses the hospice can enjoy.
“All the contributors have explained the memory their tile symbolises in a book, which will be kept by the screen in the patients’ lounge, to make it even more significant to those visiting.
“Rebecca Cresswell and I both have experience of working with art in healthcare and know that it can bring real benefits to patients’ wellbeing but we were particularly impressed by the enthusiasm of those taking part in this project.
“They should all feel extremely proud of the finished result - it looks stunning.”
The redevelopment of the hospice includes improvements to the layout, a new patient hoist system and full redecoration, funded by The Department of Health’s dignity and care for older people programme - a national scheme to improve care services for the elderly.
The changes are aimed at creating an enriching environment, promoting privacy, dignity, independence and choice for patients and visitors at the hospice.
Head of fundraising and communications at the hospice, Tracy Marsh, said: “The work on the interior to date has exceeded my expectations and feedback from our patients, staff, volunteers and visitors has been glowing.
“We wanted the patients’ lounge to be an uplifting place, and the memory screen adds a personal touch that just makes it all the more special for those who come here.
“We have more than 22,000 patients and visitors each year who will benefit from these changes, so it will have a major impact on a lot of lives.
“It’s taken such a lot of preparation, we’re all excited to see the hard work and planning come to fruition in such a spectacular way.”
