Compton Hospice reaches gold in infection prevention awards

Wolverhamptons Compton Hospice has attained the highest standard of infection prevention and control in an award scheme run by the citys primary care trust.

The hospice gained gold status in the Infection Prevention Charter Awards judged by Wolverhampton City PCT.

The awards examined a wide range of factors including the management of infection control, how staff complied with infection control guidelines by washing hands, using protective clothing and handling discarded needles as well as management of waste.

The hospice scored above 95 per cent overall to gain the gold standard, an improvement on the charity’s silver award in the scheme last year.

“It’s very pleasing to get the gold standard because all the staff work very hard on infection prevention and control to ensure we provide the very best care for our patients,” said Compton Hospice’s infection control liaison nurse Jean Hatfield.

“It’s especially important that we maintain the highest possible standards of infection prevention and control at Compton Hospice as many of our patients are very vulnerable to acquiring infections.

“So we do take a lot of care that guidelines, which are regularly reinforced in training, are actually followed on the ward by all clinical and non-clinical staff,” she said.

The award comes after the hospice’s catering department was recently given the highest five-star hygiene rating, in the ‘Scores on the Doors’ scheme, following an inspection by environmental health officers.

“The catering staff are fully committed to the safety of food and the service of good wholesome safe food to our patients is very important to them,” said hotel service manager Jacinta Lacey.

The hospice is due to be presented with the infection prevention award, along with the other winners, at a ceremony at Penn Hospital on Thursday 18 March.
