Care In The Home
“We went to Compton Hospice for a chair-raiser. What we got was Jane, a Clinical Nurse Specialist. After assessing our needs, things certainly got moving. I got a new drug therapy that gave me back my mobility, and Reiki sessions - a complementary therapy that lifted my depression and helped ease the pain. It’s good to know I can call her at any time. I can really talk to Jane.”
Although we strive to provide a warm and comfortable environment for our patients at the hospice, we know that home is where most patients and their families would like to be.
Our team of 11 specialist palliative care nurses offer the support that can make this possible.
Through on-going home visits, our specialist nurses complete a thorough assessment of your, and your family’s needs. This allows them to offer the kind of support and assistance to help make daily life a little easier for you at home.
From requesting equipment to adapt your home into a suitable caring environment, to advising on the management of troublesome symptoms, or offering the support of other hospice services such as day care, lymphoedema, or complementary therapies, our specialist nurses can suggest what is appropriate for you.
Our nurses may also be able to issue prescriptions, preventing any lengthy wait for new medications when time is of the essence.
Working in partnership
Following a first assessment and discussion at your home, your specialist nurse will agree a support plan with you and your carers.
We then work alongside other professionals involved in your care, such as your GP, hospital consultant, district nurse or social worker, combining our skills to find the best solution to benefit you and your family.
Emotional support
As well as offering practical help, our Clinical Nurse Specialists understand the impact being told you have advanced cancer, or another life- limiting condition, can have - and are there to help you cope.
Our patients often build up a rapport with their nurse that enables them to ask the questions they may not want to broach with anyone else, or talk about their deepest feelings and worries. We promise to listen without making any judgement, and offer caring support.
Our team will always endeavour to find ways of helping you cope with your situation, and assist with the variety of problems you may encounter - whether physical, psychological or social.
“Sarah, my granddaughter, has cared for me at my home for the last three years. She’s only 26 and at times she’s been under a lot of pressure. Compton Hospice’s home care service has been fantastic, providing respite and night care to give her a well-deserved break.”
