Physiotherapy

Improving patients’ quality of life by promoting independence and helping people adapt to their changing condition.

Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession which views movement as central to health and well-being. It aims to identify and make the most of ability, to maximise independent living.

our expert physiotherapists

Our expert physiotherapist, Jan McLachlan, works one-to-one with patients to address ways of helping them retain their independence throughout their illness.

We can also offer advice and instruction to relatives and carers about the best ways to handle and move patients, ensuring the safety and comfort of everyone involved.

As with all other disciplines within the hospice, physiotherapists consider the psychological, cultural and social factors that influence patients and promote activities that will help them make the best of their abilities for a fulfilling life.

Through the use of negotiation of realistic goals, gentle exercise programmes, equipment advice and instruction, physiotherapy can help with:

  • Maintaining / improving mobility
  • Adjustment to changing abilities and self-help techniques
  • Maintaining / improving daily living activites
  • Coping with breathlessness
  • Fatigue management
  • Late complaints following breast surgery
  • Falls risk awareness
  • Improving confidence and self-esteem
  • Joint problems associated with secondary lymphoedema
  • Relaxation techniques

Physiotherapy treatments do not cause pain or distress and we will always agree a care plan with each patient, making sure they have a realistic understanding of what is possible.

We understand that, as illnesses progress, a patient’s abilities and needs change and so we constantly re-evaluate individual treatment programmes, helping people adapt to these changes.

Who can access the physiotherapy service at the hospice?

Help is at hand

Patients using other services at the hospice, on an in-patient or out-patient basis, can ask to be referred to the physiotherapist.

We also have close links with other service providers - within the hospice, in hospitals and in the community - and can offer advice and referral to other suitable services with the patient’s consent.
