Shops Introduction

Raising £750,000 each year to invest in patient care and the upkeep of the hospice.

Awards

We are extremely proud of our trading company’s reputation. Our shops have won prestigious national awards four years running, because we continually strive to improve our service to the customers who support us year after year. Without them, we couldn’t raise the vital funds needed - so we do all we can to offer a well-organised and friendly place to shop.

The trading company operates like any other business, governed by income and expenditure, profit and loss. To make a profit, we rely completely on our team of 650 workers, paid and unpaid, to make the operation a success. Their enthusiasm and dedication continues to pay dividends, running a range of shops in and around Wolverhampton.

At the moment, the trading company runs 18 charity shops, an online giftware and card shop and is soon to launch a brand new auction area - our very own c-bay!

The team

General manager of the trading company, Sue Chance, oversees the running of 16 second-hand shops across the Black Country, a coffee shop at the Compton Road hospice site and a second-hand furniture store in Skinner Street, Wolverhampton.

Sue is supported by assistant manager Mary Davies and administrative assistant Sue Gardiner.

Each shop is managed day-to-day by a paid supervisor, but relies heavily on the support of a team of volunteers to keep the operation running smoothly. Without them, the shops simply couldn’t open.

There are constant opportunities for people wanting to get involved, from serving at the tills to sorting through donated items, pressing and hanging clothes and window-dressing. We also need cooks and waiters in our coffee shop.

Our shops

We offer quality second-hand clothing, bric-a-brac, toys, books, giftware and more at our 18 second-hand shops across the region.

Coffee

Our coffee shop is renowned for the quality home-cooked food served daily, including roast dinners, lasagne, steak pie, broccoli and stilton quiche and freshly baked cakes, as well as having a wide selection of books for sale.

And the Wolverhampton furniture store stocks a variety of larger donated items, from sofas and dining sets to wardrobes and occasionally, antiques.

We welcome any donations and can arrange collection of large items at no charge, or can organise house clearances on request.

The trading company operates three vans and employs six full-time drivers who collect and deliver furniture and distribute other donated goods to the various shop outlets, moving stock where it’s needed.

All of our shops are open from 9.00a.m. till 4.00p.m. Monday to Saturday, with the exception that our Coffee shop on site is only open until 3.30p.m. Our nearly new shop at Compton is also open on Sundays from 10.00a.m. until 4.00p.m. To see a full list of our hospice shop sites, click the following link shop locations

Online shop and auction site

The trading company sells an extensive range of brand new giftware - through its chain of shops, in the reception at the hospice and via our online shop. This includes ornaments, glassware, trinkets, novelty items and various ethnic products purchased through ‘fair trade’ means.

We also sell a popular range of Christmas cards and offer a personalisation service, printing names of individuals or businesses if required.

More than 50 per cent of the proceeds go straight to the hospice, and sales added £50,000 to the trading company’s profits last year.

The online auction site will be the newest addition to the trading company. Prompted by the success of previous auctions we held at the hospice, and the popularity of e-bay, we decided this could be a profitable outlet for donated items of value. The auction area is due to go live early in 2009.

Our shops often receive donations of antiques, memorabilia and collectors’ items such as paintings and pottery, which could raise more money for the hospice by reaching a wider audience.

New items will be added every three months and goods will go to the highest UK bidder.
