Volunteering at Compton Hospice

Yvonne

”I have time rather than money to donate, so that’s what I give”

Yvonne, Cedars’ receptionist

Contributing your time to the hospice is valued equally to cash donations.

Compton Hospice couldn’t continue to serve the community without the commitment and dedication of the 615 volunteers that give of their time each year to help keep our services running.

Without these unsung heroes, our organisation could not function. In fact, volunteers at Compton Hospice outnumber paid workers by almost three to one and, in monetary terms, save the hospice around £1 million each year in salaries.

But because their motivation is often very personal, the care and personality our volunteers bring to the hospice enhance the service we offer in a very special way and it’s hard to put a value on that input.

Volunteer roles

Sandra

"I firmly believe that the people who work at Compton, both paid staff and volunteers, are special and I enjoy working amongst them"
Sandra, Administration volunteer.

With the support of professionals at the hospice, volunteers fulfil a variety of challenging roles that make the ongoing treatment of 500 people in and around Wolverhampton a possibility, both on site and in the community.

From receptionist to gardener, driver to shop assistant, patient visitor to cook, the diversity of roles means anyone can get involved, regardless of age or ability.

Or for professionals with specific skills that can benefit the hospice, there are trustee positions, jobs in finance and roles that can make use of corporate experience and contacts.

And with time scales varying from an hour a month to a weekly or daily four- hour shift, we can accommodate time commitments at any level. Weekend and evening volunteers are also vital to the hospice, meaning you can fit a voluntary role around your work schedule.

The benefits of volunteering

People choose to volunteer for different reasons, but all those who have done so will tell you of the benefits they’ve experienced since joining our team.

As well as making a whole new set of friends, the knowledge that your achievements are making such a difference to people’s lives can be extremely rewarding.

And many of our volunteers tell how the new-found skills they’ve gained while working for the hospice transfer to their lives at home or to their everyday jobs.

Training

The amount and type of training you receive as a volunteer will depend on the task you choose to undertake.

All volunteers receive a 2-3 hour induction session but some roles require more intensive, ongoing training - especially if there is patient contact involved.

The reasons we train our volunteers are:

  • To ensure our volunteers understand, and work in line with, the values of the hospice
  • To ensure volunteers are comfortable, confident and adequately prepared for their role
  • To look after the interests of our patients
  • To provide the best service possible to our users

The amount and type of training required for a position will be outlined before you make any commitment to the hospice.
